Serving as a practical training instructor at Les Roches Marbella since 2013, Miguel Merino is also the school’s official sommelier and provides guidance to students with an interest in enology through wine tastings and seminars.
With many years of experience working with wines in his hometown in the mountains of Malaga’s wine-rich region of the Sierra de Ronda, Miguel set out to build on his knowledge by attending wine tasting school in Madrid where he earned his national sommelier accreditation through the Escuela Española de Cata.
Most recently, in October 2019, he obtained international accreditation with the renown Wine Spirit Education Trust (WSET) of London where he currently holds a WSET Level 3 certificate. Miguel’s expertise and passion for wine provide students with the practical skills and knowledge that are so highly valued in the hospitality industry. By means of Miguel’s guidance and on-campus master classes, several students have themselves been inspired to obtain beginner certifications as an added skill for their professional CVs.
Miguel Merino’s signature touch, according to his colleagues in the F&B Department, is his knack for selecting high-quality wines for less than ten euros that are comparable (and oftentimes better than) to expensive labels. He states that his favorite wines are those that are made from the grapes of the Sierra de Ronda and wherever he goes, he is a faithful ambassador to for the region’s vineyards.
